Remarks

Auction Property: List price may not reflect final sales price. The Pearis Theater opened 12/20/1939. Built by the Star Amusement Co. in cooperation with the Witten family. The theater is “L” shaped, with a one-lot lobby and an auditorium that extends three lots. The adjoining "Wittten building", was constructed at the same time, currently accommodating retail activity on the first floor and housed professional offices on the second floor. A fire in the 1950’s gutted the Witten Building, which, once rehabilitated, lost its historic integrity. The Pearis Theater, however, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places for being a rare example of Art Deco architecture in SW Virginia and for the local recreational and cultural significance. The name “Pearis” was named after Capt. George Pearis who served with Montgomery County, VA Militia during the American Revolution and was the town’s namesake. $12,000 opening bid. 10% buyer's premium added to winning bid for final price.
